Edwin High King of Britain

From the back of the book:  Edwin, the long-exiled king of Northumbria, thought he had found sanctuary at the court of  King Raedwald- his friend, and now protector.  But  Raedeald faced the lure of riches and the threat of bloodshed, and Edwin feared that he will be abandoned to his enemies.

As Edwin contemplated his fate, a mysterious messenger prophesies that he will ascend to greater heights than any of his forefathers.  Can Edwin escape the fearsome warrior king who is calling for his blood?  Do the Anglo-Saxon Gods of old, or the new God from across the sea really have the power to raise Edwin above all other kings?

This book was a wonderful read.  It was interesting to read of the old kingdoms and kings.  The Historical note in the end of the book tells us that these events took place over 1,400 years ago.

This book is well written and will keep you captivated as you go back in time and read through the history, the battles and the way of life.

I love how the story unfolds the true God, our Lord and savior and how the gospel is spread to the Anglo-Saxons, through Paulinus, the new Queen's priest.

I highly recommend this book, especially for those who love history!

Active Spirituality

Personally, this was a very hard review for me to write, I had to sit down and think very hard about what I could say.

Active SpiritualityBrian Hedges has brought to us a book written to Christians on our daily walk with God.   Written in a letter form, with lots of illustrations from authors we all know well;  it is easy to read through the doctrine that he has supplied.

What I found is that Mr. Hedges is deep in the Reformation movement, which is different from my view of the Bible, nonetheless,  Mr. Hedges has gone into deep lengths to explain the Reformation side of doctrine.

This would be an excellent book for those who are interested in the Reformation movement, or others who would like to see what it is all about.

Deeper than Red

Twenty-year-old Tally Greyson isn’t consumed with her own education, social life, or career goals like most young women her age. Instead, she’s trying to save her mother from the grasp of a seductive cult. What Tally doesn’t realize is that in this community, there’s a far greater danger than any she can imagine—and she and her mother aren’t the only ones in its sights. There are plots brewing here that will threaten the fate of the world. Concert pianist Liesl Bower has put her own dangerous past behind her, and in her Charleston family home, surrounded by those who love her, she’s preparing for a world concert tour with her dear friend, violinist Max Morozov. She thinks she’s safe; the man who tried to kill her is dead, his co conspirators have been rounded up, and no one knows she had anything to do with saving the world from a new revolution. That is, until a world leader is assassinated on the other side of the globe, setting events into motion that could kill the U.S. president, destroy Washington—and take everything and everyone Liesl loves with it. A madman is at the controls now. Even with the backup of the CIA and the dubious protection of a former KGB agent, this time they may all be too late. The heart-pounding final book in the Red Returning trilogy, Deeper Than Red goes further into the world of espionage and action than ever before, delving into the very worst powers of darkness, and pitting them against the light of faith, love, and forgiveness.

This is book three in the Red Returning Trilogy.  A great book for those that love a great suspense mystery book.   It is well written, and keeps the reader intrigued.

Author Sue Duffy continues with her Russian conspirator series, and has done a great job once again, keeping the romance and thrills with the government, murder, occult and mystery.   This will be a great read for the summer, it's a fast and easy read.

I believe that there is a little of everything in this book that will keep audience of all ages, and this book would suite almost anyone.

Blossom Street Brides

From the back of the book:

Lauren Elliott has waited years for her long-term boyfriend, Todd, to propose, yet he seems more focused on his career than their relationship. When Lauren learns that her younger sister is pregnant before she herself even has an engagement ring, she feels overjoyed yet disheartened. Knowing she can’t put her future on hold, Lauren prepares to make a bold choice—one that leads her to a man she never dreamed she’d meet.
Newly married to her second husband, Max, Bethanne Scranton is blissfully in love. But with Max’s job in California and Bethanne’s in Seattle, their long-distance marriage is becoming difficult to maintain. To complicate matters, Bethanne’s cunning ex will do anything to win her back.
Lydia Goetz, too, is wonderfully happy with her husband, Brad, though lately she worries about the future of A Good Yarn. As she considers how to bring in business, she discovers that someone has beaten her to the punch. Baskets of yarn are mysteriously popping up all over town, with instructions to knit a scarf for charity and bring it into Lydia’s store. Never before has her shop received so much attention, but who hatched this brilliant plan?
As three women’s lives intersect in unexpected ways, Lydia, Lauren, and Bethanne realize that love heals every heart, and the best surprises still lay ahead.

This is a truly enjoyable book, it revolves around  women brought together by one baby blanket in a yarn shop window.   Written by author Debbie Macomber, it will keep you on the edge of your seat, and draws you into the lives of these women.     I have never read a book by Debbie Macomber before, but will put her on my list of must read authors.

If you want an enjoyable, easy to read, hard to put down book for the summer this is it.    It is a good Christian book,  and I guarantee you will fall in love with the characters.

Heart Wide Open

You believe in God. You’re trying to serve Him.
But do you know how to truly love Him—and let Him love you?

As a Bible-believing churchgoer, author Shellie Tomlinson harbored a secret in her good-girl heart. She longed for something more than routine faith; she wanted to love God with a genuine, all-consuming passion. So she got honest with Him: “I admit it. I don’t love you like I should, but I want to love you. Help me!”

In Heart Wide Open, Shellie invites you to answer the call of your restless heart and refuse to settle for anything less than the intimate friendship of God. Through her heartfelt and honest words, you’ll find practical inspiration to help you…
·   exchange your “just enough Jesus” mindset for an all-out pursuit of Him
·   put sizzle in your Bible study by asking God to show you the wonder of His Word
·   trade formulaic devotions for a devoted life

How often do we feel like we have wandered from God, and felt that emptiness that takes place when we do?   How many of us have felt I want to love God more and not know how or where to go?

In this book we are shown how and where to find answers to these questions.  How to become more in love with our Lord and Savior.  This book is filled with scripture and encouragement to become closer to Him.

The author has taken the reader through, the process of loving Him, to finding our quiet time with God, dealing with the world and unbelievers.   In the back of the book there are study questions that would would make this book a great personal or group Bible Study.

Memorial: The Mystery of Mary of Bethany

THE MYSTERY OF MARY OF BETHANYFrom the back of the book: It seems everyone loves a mystery story, but it's a rare thing to find a mystery story combined with Bible Study.  Dolores Kimball brings these together and draws out lessons for life that have a special relevance for women.

Mary, there are many Mary's in the Bible, but the one that is the least known is Mary of Bethany.  When we get to know her as we read about her and her sister Martha, we find out that most of us ladies tend to be more like her sister.   In this book we are travel through the Bible, learning more about this woman, her love for her Lord, and how we can become more like her.

This book is full of scripture, and teaches us a very important fact: we need to be like Mary.  We need to sit at our Lord's feet and put the busyness of the day behind us, lock out the world and tune in Jesus!

Very well written, well researched, and intriguing to read.   I recommend this book, and would use this book in a women's Bible study.
