Women of the Word

We all know it's important to read and study our Bibles, but as anyone knows it's really hard to know where to start.   With a shortage of time, maybe you tried before and gave up.  This book is written to help teach us to keep our focus to keep in God's word and studying.

Jen Wilkin helps lead and guide you through the process with a pointed plan to help the reader get into God's word.

Jen Wilkin has written a book that we all need, this is specifically written to help women get into and more out of their Bibles.   How many times do we come to our Bibles in our quiet time and wonder what now?  Where do I go,  what do I read?

This book will help stir that desire to begin studying.  " I approached my study time asking the wrong questions.  I read the Bible asking "Who am I? and "What should I do?"    The author continues on the explain how and where to begin.

Jen Wilkin skillfully shows the reader how to grow and build a foundation of Biblical knowledge with practical, charming and delightful fashion.

This would make an excellent study book for a women's Bible study to help them get more enjoyment and knowledge out of their studies.

Beauty Begins

Beauty Begins is written by mother-daughter team Chris Shook and Megan Shook Alpha.    They have written a book that illustrates what true beauty is and how we as Christians should look at ourselves.

They teach us how to be satisfied with the looks that have been given to us by God and how to look toward our inner beauty rather than focusing on the outer image.

We do live in a society that puts a huge emphasis on the outer image. We see it on the television, in magazines, in advertising.  Everywhere you turn you hear about weight loss programs, how to look younger, to be more fit.

I truly enjoyed this book.  This is a must-read for every woman no matter what her age.  Young or old it needs to be read.  My copy is now high lighted and dog-eared.  It will be my go-to reference for women (other than the Bible)  to teach them about their true inner beauty.

I highly recommend this book, it's well researched, well written and thought motivating for all women who read this.  You will come away with a new perspective on how to truly love yourself.

This is a book that can be read alone, or with a group or even as a study for women's groups or a Bible study.

Together On God's Mission

Publisher's Synopsis:

Together on God’s Mission investigates Southern Baptist history, showing how and why the Southern Baptist Convention came to embrace the vision of a cooperative denomination. It also explores how this vision has shaped denominational identity and structure. This historical study is followed by a discussion of the biblical description of how the mission of God determines the mission of the church. This study shows that God’s mission is not simply furthered by churches working together, but rather that cooperation between churches makes up a key component of God’s mission. Finally, the study concludes that the Southern Baptist Convention is uniquely positioned to enable churches to fully participate in God’s mission to redeem the nations and restore creation from the effects of the Fall.

My Thoughts:  A short but well-written book that expresses and informs the reader of SBC's history and the co-operative program.   It deals with the past and also what may happen with the younger generations that are coming up in the church.

A very informative book on how the SBC operates and understanding the challenges that the cooperation faces.

An interesting read for anyone interested in the SBC.

Keturah

England, the year 1773.   Keturah and her sisters find themselves heiresses to their father's properties and assets.  A letter soon comes telling them of the drought, machinery failure and an overseer lost to the "fever", all with profits far lower than the last.

Lady Keturah is determined to make sure her sisters are well provided for and the three sisters head off to the West Indies, which was totally unheard of for ladies of England's society at that time.

Lady Keturah Banning Tomlinson, a widow, from an abusive marriage has sworn that she will never marry again, but her childhood friend Gray Covington is traveling to the West Indies to develop his sugar plantation that happens to border Keturah's.  Will Keturah's heart ever soften again?

This was a fantastic story of a woman bound and determined to make a way for herself, as well as her sisters in a society that demanded women to be dependant on men.  Keturah's strong character is what makes this story flow.  The reader is drawn to her supporting her and cheering her on throughout the story.    A fast-paced read, and a truly enjoyable one.  Set in the West Indies.   The author has done a vast amount of research to make this novel so real to life, which makes it all the more enjoyable and true to the reader.

I was thrilled that the characters all leaned heavily on God in this novel.  I think the lesson of this novel, or the point that is brought out, is that we too must rely on God, put our stubbornness behind us.  A wonderful story of adventure, romance, and forgiveness.

Winning Miss Winthorp

Carolyn Miller introduces her new series The Regency Brides.   In the first book, we are introduced to Catherine Winthrop who has been recovering from feeling rejected by the man who stole her heart and rejected her love, she is finally feeling like she can move on.

When Catherine's father suddenly passes away, she not only loses the only home that she ever knew, but who moves in and takes her father's title?  None other than Jonathan Carlew, the man who broke her heart.

With the rumors about Jonathan's birth and being a tradesman find him without the approval of the ladies parents, but now suddenly finding himself well to do and with a title, he now has plenty of prospects for a wife.   Jonathan finds that his responsibilities keep him too busy, but also he only thinks of the woman to whom he lost his heart many years ago.

Can time and forgiveness bring them together?

In this novel, we see the value of forgiveness and how holding a grudge can hurt not only ourselves but those around us.  It also teaches how we should always take time to listen to those who are precious. to us.

Carolyn Miller has cleverly brought back some of our favorite characters that not only strengthens the storyline but adds some familiarity and nostalgia for her followers who have read her other novels.

This book was an enjoyment to read I look forward to the next in the series  "Serena's Secret"

A must-read for those who like to read historical fiction.

Could Use a Nap and a Million Dollars

Do you wonder where life is going sometimes?  We focus on the things we see around us, the laundry, the bills, the housework, we over commit ourselves to church,  our jobs.  All this can weigh on our shoulders.

Written especially for women, author Jessie Clenence has written a book about combating stress, examining the  Bible for answers.   With 27 small chapters, dealing with h situations that we can see ourselves nodding our heads, thinking, yes I've been there done that!  With her wit and a great sense of humor.  She knows the day to day stresses that we face and she discusses what the bible tells us about how we should react to the daily frustrations that come into our daily lives.

Every chapter closes with three focuses; make it personal,  a scripture\passage that ties it all together, and a prayer for today.

The themes are tough, the author doesn't hold back.  They are important and sometimes can be challenging and convicting.

I absolutely enjoyed this book.  Not only was it fun to read, but I learned that I am not alone in my stresses and that we need to lean on God more and less of ourselves.
