Claiming Mariah

After her father’s death, Mariah Malone sends a letter that will forever alter the lives of her family. When Slade Donovan, strong willed and eager for vengeance, shows up on her front porch, Mariah is not ready to hear his truths: her father’s farm, the only home she’s ever known, was bought with stolen gold. With Slade ready to collect his father’s rightful claim and force Mariah and her family out on the streets, Mariah must turn to God for guidance. Though Mr. Frederick Cooper, a local landowner, promises to answer her financial woes if she agrees to be his bride, Mariah finds herself drawn instead to the angry young man demanding her home.

With the ranch now under Slade’s careful eye, he unearths more than he ever imagined as a devious plot of thievery, betrayal, and murder threatens the well-being of the ranch, endangering those who hold it dear. As the days dwindle until the rest of the Donovan clan arrives at the Lazy M ranch, Mariah and Slade must rise above the resentment of their fathers and see their true feelings before greed changes their futures forever.

In this well written historical novel, one will find many things to keep their attention. From rustlers to romance!    A young woman is forced to hand over the only home she ever knew, to settle a debt; she wonders if she should marry for the sake of marrying, or head on out and start over fresh.  Will she find love with the handsome Slade who demanded her ranch?

A truly enjoyable novel, one that any reader will love to curl up with.

Solid Food

The early Hebrew Christians were encouraged to stand firmly in their faith in Jesus Christ. Hebrews, as a sermon or a letter, was targeted to Christian Jews who were tired of waiting for Jesus’s return and who were experiencing the persecution that comes from being followers of a man who was crucified on a Roman cross. The book of Hebrews encouraged them to view Jesus as the all-sufficient, powerful redeemer who would complete God’s program to bring us to Him. Today, by attempting to study the letter of Hebrews in the context of the original language, culture, and environment, we can see how Jewish history points to Jesus fulfilling the law and the prophets. Solid Food is a clear, concise guide to better understanding the richness of this Epistle and its relevance to the church today.

This is a good book for those who are looking for an in depth study of the book of Hebrews.

Jeffery Leath, digs deep into the book, and looks at historical aspects, as he goes through the book chapter by chapter.  He has done an amazing amount of research for this book.  This is a good study tool, that can be used on your own or even in a group setting as you read along in your Bible.

Grace for the Contemplative Parent

Based on Brother Lawrence's classic Practice of the Presence of God, this book is geared for real-time moms whose lives are full of dirty diapers and soccer practice. Don't have luxurious hours of quiet time like a 17th century monk? You are not missing out. The gospel awakens us to the very real presence of Christ in our everyday, seemingly "mundane" state of affairs. Full of practical, down-to-earth, real-life examples and wisdom from a mother of four, Lily draws readers to the simple awareness of God's presence in the day-to-day role of parenting. Experience fulfillment of a Holy Spirit saturated life in the midst of doing laundry! Realizing the grace of the gospel and our effortless union with Christ enables mothers to enjoy and rest secure in their spirituality. Religion-free parenting. Letting go of guilt and shame. It's all found in the finished work of the cross.

Lily Crowder gives mothers a whole new meaning of being a stay at home mom.  Gone is the stereotype from the world, and in comes the warmth and love that God wants us to feel as mothers.  We are reminded that children are a gift from God and that we should cherish them.

Lily Crowder has a great writing style, and any mother or soon to be mother will enjoy reading this book.

Delivering Women from the Snares of Death

Delivering Women from the Snares of Death"Counting all glory and authority as belonging to God and Him alone, Paige Coleman wisely imparts to her beloved sisters in Christ what it means to faithfully live and love the Word of God. She shows that the prosperity of the soul is a God-given blessing that it is His pleasure to deliver to those who fear Him.
In an in-depth, scripturally-rich investigation of seven biblical women whose lives are given as examples for us to learn by, Paige Coleman will show you how to break the snares that trap you in sin. Delivering Women from the Snares of Death will help you purge your heart from being foolish, clamorous, stubborn, wanton, idle, and usurping, so that you can be blessed and fulfilled in Christ.
Through your courageous willingness to strip your soul of those incessant, worldly habits that thwart your growth in Christ, you will learn how to live a godly and feminine life fulfilling the exciting roles that God has intended for you.
Stand firm in your faith as a single woman, delight your husband and give him glory as a wife, model godliness and joy to your children, and give your Father in heaven every reason to prosper your soul and bejewel your crown of glory in the kingdom that is to come."

This is a great book written to believing women, to help them in their walk with Christ.   There are many issues that Paige Coleman brings up and helps the reader search through with scriptures.  The one thing I love about this book is that it is full of scripture!  At the end of each chapter she brings up a "modern snapshot" to help illustrate her points.   I found this very helpful, along with the questions at the end.

This is a great tool, and I would consider using it in a women's small group or bible study.

The Memory Child

When Brian finds out that his wife, Diane, is pregnant, he is elated. He’s been patiently waiting for twelve years to become a father. But Diane has always been nervous about having children because of her family’s dark past. The timing of the pregnancy also isn’t ideal—Diane has just been promoted, and Brian is being called away to open a new London office for his company.
Fast-forward one year: being a mother has brought Diane a sense of joy that she’d never imagined and she’s head over heels for her new baby, Grace. But things are far from perfect: Brian has still not returned from London, and Diane fears leaving the baby for even a moment. As unsettling changes in those around Diane began to emerge, it becomes clear that all is not as it seems.
A woman’s dark past collides head-on with her mysterious present in this surreal and gripping family drama.

This book was well written, and a fairly fast read.   It switched back and forth from the past to the present to give the reader and idea of what was happening a year before and a year later.

The story line was different, it lead the reader to assume different ideas about what was happening in the lives of the characters.     It leads you through the life of Diane, who's mother had suffered from postpartum psychosis.  As the author continues in the story the reader is cheering Diane along,  and then the surprise ending.

The author deals with the topic of postpartum psychosis, and gives the reader and understanding of what happens and what may be the cause.

On Grace

Grace May is truly excited about turning 40 in a few months. And now that her boys are both in school and she has a stimulating new writing job, the next chapter in her life can finally begin. She can’t wait to rediscover the intelligent and interesting woman deeply buried under the layers of mother and wife.
But when Grace loses her job and gets unexpected news from her husband and her best friend, life suddenly gets complicated. Grace stands to lose everything: her marriage, her best friend, and her sense of self. But by her 40th birthday party, Grace will realize who and what matter most. With laughter. With tears. With grace.

This is a well written novel,  it wasn't anything like I expected.  It was a great read, it went quickly.

The topic of the novel is one that we face in society more often these days, and I think it was handled well in this novel.  The one thing I didn't like, was the use of unnecessary  language in the novel.

All in all yes, if your looking for a book to curl up with on a rainy day, this would be great, but it is a secular book, with secular ideas.

Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe

As a wife, you have been given the privilege of serving as a mighty prayer warrior for your husband. Yet sometimes, even when poised with the best of intentions, the task can feel overwhelming. You wonder: What should I pray? How should I pray? What prayers does he need right now?
In Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe, Sharon Jaynes maps out sixteen landmarks to help you consistently and effectively cover your husband in prayer – from his mind and the thoughts he thinks, to his eyes and the images he sees, all the way down to his feet and the path he takes, Sharon teaches you how to pray for your husband in ways that are powerful, practical and life-changing.
The 30-day prayer guide provides sixteen key Scriptures and coinciding prayers that target the crucial areas of every man’s life. You’ll be equipped and empowered to begin the daily habit of covering your husband in prayer from head-to-toe in just a few dedicated minutes each day.
Perfect for group use or individual reflection, this book maps out a memorable and reproducible pattern of prayer to strengthen your marriage, deepen your personal prayer life, and cover your husband from head to toe—in ways that will lift not only his spirit, but yours as well.

Prayer is one of our most important weapons in our spiritual daily lives, and what could be more practical and loving than praying for your husband!

In this book,  Sharon Jaynes illustrates the purpose and power of prayer,  and gives a wonderful illustration of how it helped her own father.     I love how she lists the landmarks of prayer, his mind, what he sees, what he listens to and much more.  We as wives should be praying for our husbands every day, and with this book, it will teach you how and keep you in the practice of praying each day, using scripture for him from head to toe.

Destructive Justice

Destructive Justice: A Lost Boy, a Broken System and the Small Light of HopeBy all accounts, Nathan Frank started out as a terrific kid with the brightest of futures ahead of him. With the advent of adolescence, however, Nathan’s world and his relationships begin to unravel. No matter which way he turns, he seems to find conflict. Eventually, with his powerful personality, he becomes his own generator of conflict as he steadily enters a world of drugs, defiance and ultimately a criminal street gang. Finally, he runs off the rails at full throttle, coming to a hard stop at seventeen years old when he is arrested for his participation in a botched robbery. With his arrest, Nathan is swept into a justice system of condemnation and ruination for those who enter its control. There, the fact that he is a troubled teen means nothing – maybe less than nothing. Nathan is tried as an adult and sentenced to multiple life terms for his crimes. So at seventeen, he enters a world where exploitation, violence and abject hopelessness reign. Forgiveness, rehabilitation, redemption are hardly even notions within our justice and corrections systems. Logically, Nathan should be crushed by his fate. He very nearly is. But, the man Nathan becomes, a man who finds his strength in fundamentally good qualities that he suppressed for so many years, will not be crushed. Somehow, in one of the worst places on earth, he rediscovers the best parts of himself. Destructive Justice follows Nathan from the great promise of his earliest years, to the great tragedy of his adolescence, to the small light of hope for an even greater redemption.

This is a powerful book that will open your eyes to our justice system.   How can one young boy be put through so much, when others seem to float through the system?

This book amazed me and educated me as well, it is powerfully written, and you won't want to put it down.  I also wonder and pray that maybe this book will help raise some light on this families predicament and hopefully get this young man some justice.

This is a heart wrenching must read,  and hopefully open our eyes to see that our youth need help, they need answers.

About the Author, Nicholas Frank
Nicholas Frank (a pen name) is the epitome of an ordinary guy, except he and his family have lived through most extraordinary events. Those events serve as the inspiration for this book - his first and perhaps last. He lives with his beautiful wife in Southern California.

True Reason

Today's New Atheists proclaim themselves our culture's party of reason. It is a claim they cannot sustain. Reason is the New Atheists' weakness, not their strength and in fact, the Christian faith is a far better place to look for True Reason.
True Reason Book CoverIn sixteen carefully constructed essays by more than a dozen Christian thinkers including William Lane Craig, Sean McDowell, and Timothy McGrew,True Reason unmasks the frequent irrationality displayed by leading atheists like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens. The authors go on to show the great extent to which the Christian faith has historically supported sound reasoning, and that Christian thinkers, past and present, have demonstrated real excellence in reasoned, rational thinking.
Making their case accessible to the first-time inquirer as well as the serious student, this top-flight team of writers presents a sound defense and a strong introduction to the true reason uniquely found in Christianity.

This is a great book that helps us with our apologetics, and dealing with the new atheism.   In our world today there are so many "worldviews" and we have to know how to deal with them all...

This book will help us understand what they are thinking and how to combat these ideas we are up against.

Captivated

Captivated: Beholding The Mystery of Jesus' Death and Resurrection Book Cover
The Bible implores us to take a long look at Jesus, forcefully beckoning us to “come and see” through profound questions connected with Jesus’ death and resurrection. These questions drive us to consider not just the events themselves but also their meaning as we take a long look beneath the surface and find more of the never-ending treasures of Christ. In Captivated, Thabiti Anyabwile invites you to set aside your early lessons on politeness and stare (yes, do stare) into the mystery of the cross and empty tomb.

Captivated begins with us asking God why...when what we must focus on what Christ did for us, imagine the hurt that He felt when He took our sins on that cross.

This is an amazing book, that will help you think deeper about what  Christ did for us, and what it means and  how important it was.   With this small book, the content is easy to read, and there are questions at the end of every chapter.   Very appropriate for the season we are entering!

It Had to Be You

This is the story of Eden Christiansen  who never imagined her role as her younger brother Owen’s cheerleader would keep her on the sidelines of her own life. Sure, it feels good to be needed, but looking after the reckless NHL rookie leaves little time for Eden to focus on her own career. She dreamed of making a name for herself as a reporter, but is stuck writing obits—and starting to fear she doesn’t have the chops to land a major story. If only someone would step up to mentor Owen . . . but she knows better than to expect help from team veteran and bad-boy enforcer Jace Jacobsen.

Jace has built his career on the infamous reputation of his aggressive behavior—on and off the ice. Now at a crossroads about his future in hockey, that reputation has him trapped. And the guilt-trip he’s getting from Eden Christiansen isn’t making things any easier. But when Owen’s carelessness leads to a career-threatening injury and Eden stumbles upon a story that could be her big break, she and Jace are thrown together . . . and begin to wonder if they belong on the same team after all.

This is an amazing and delightful book!  It carries the reader through many situations and emotions, one that every reader has felt or dealt with in life.   It is a true love story, where you want to push the characters, and tell them that God is in control.

With many twists and turns in the story, it will keep you reading until the end.  A talented writer, and great characters make this a great novel.   Ms. Warren also includes many scriptures, and a great study at the end of the book.
